Important announcement about applications
May 16, 2025
In October 2024, the Alberta Herbalists Association decided to temporarily pause the acceptance of new applications for Registered Herbalist status as we worked on enhancing the application process.
Recognizing the need to improve the Registered Herbalist application process, the AHA Board of Directors began a full review last year to make it clearer, more transparent, and accessible for all applicants.
To allow the Board the time required to thoroughly review and approve these updates, we suspended the fall application review process. While these updates are still a work in progress as we await the updated recommendations from the Canadian Council of Herbalist Associations, we have chosen to reopen Professional Applications for the time being. Please note that there will be important changes coming in the next few months to our Professional Membership requirements.
We want to address common areas of confusion and create a more transparent and easy-to-navigate system for all applicants. In collaboration with the Canadian Council of Herbalist Associations, we are implementing several significant improvements:
-
Developing a clear, standardized scoring rubric that explicitly outlines all admission criteria.
-
Revising the application form to be more user-friendly and aligned with current herbal practices.
-
Establishing defined core competencies that reflect the professional expectations for a Registered Herbalist.
We are excited about the positive impact these changes will have on future applicants and the herbalist community.
Thank you for your continued support and interest in the Alberta Herbalists Association Professional Membership.
Professional Membership Requirements
Becoming a professional member of the AHA allows you to use the designation of RH, provides you with a listing on our website, increases your exposure and profile as an herbalist and allows you to enjoy member benefits.
Becoming a professional member
There are many ways to become a herbalist. You can attend a formal school, be taught by an elder or have learned informally. The AHA recognizes that all forms of education are valid and has a professional membership application process that accommodates them. This chart summarizes the process. For details about our professional membership requirements and the application process, review our Education Standards.
